A Dutch residence permit does not make you visa-exempt for Japan. Visa need depends on your passport nationality, not on a Dutch residence card. If your nationality is not on the official MOFA exemption list, you need a visa for short stay (including tourism) even if you live in the Netherlands.
Netherlands passport, short stay: per Netherlands government travel advice, no visa is required. Longer than 90 days: a visa is required; contact the Embassy of Japan in The Hague. Sources: NLWW Japan advice; MOFA Exemption of Visa (Short-Term Stay).
Official exemption countries/regions (MOFA short-term stay) — not invented; check notes/duration on the MOFA page: Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Republic of Korea, Latvia, Lesotho, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macao, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Mexico, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Suriname, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia, Türkiye, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, Uruguay.
Work, internship and study are not covered by the short-stay exemption: the matching status/work/study visa is always required.
An internship is not automatically “temporary visitor”. Paid / formal internship: check whether you need a status visa. We help with the correct route via the embassy in The Hague.
We help you apply for Japan (internship in Japan). You fill in our form. We check documents and guide filing with the competent mission. You do not start via an official DIY apply link from this page.
